Don’t Be Fooled: Passive Income is a Lie

We have all heard the stories. They go something like this:

“I made $2000 in my sleep!”

“I took a trip to Italy and made $3600 in my business while I was on vacation!”

“I only work one day a week and make a 6 figure income!”

The gurus go on and on about passive income and they make it sound so simple.

Basically, you work very minimally and the money just rolls in automatically.

That may be true for them now, but I know it wasn’t like that when they started.

How do bloggers make big bucks without working very much?

  1. They have been doing this for a while.
  2. They have a team working for them.
  3. They have a large, loyal following.

What is passive income?

Passive income is making money online (or anywhere) by building online businesses that take advantage of systems that allow transactions, cash flow, and growth to happen without requiring a real-time presence.

How do I get passive income?

Am I against passive income? Absolutely not. I love waking up to a notification that says I have new money in my bank account. That is awesome!

But “passive” income isn’t passive.

It takes work to grow a website, an email list, a loyal following on social media and create your own products. So while they may be living the good life now, I guarantee you they worked hard for several years before they got to this point.

So why do they make it sound so easy? Why don’t they tell you how much you have to work to get there? I think they feel if they don’t tell you the hard stuff, you will be more likely to buy their product showing how you can do it too!

Is it worth it to show up everyday?

In the beginning, when you are first getting started with blogging and online business, you have to show up everyday.

You have to put in the hours of figuring out technology, finding your audience, creating content and products.

You have to grow your email list, find related affiliate programs and build relationships.

These things take time and effort, but they will be worth it.

Blogging is not a get rich quick scheme:

  1. It takes some money (although not as much as a traditional business) to get started.
  2. You probably won’t see much returns the first year.
  3. You have to be consistent in content delivery to get your name and expertise out into the world.
  4. If you want to make money, you may need to offer extra services to make ends meet.
  5. You will feel frustrated and want to quit before it finally all starts paying off.

Someone who really explains this well is Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income. He is great about telling it how it is and helping people make money online. I love his podcasts and website.

I have some resources below that will help you further explore this issue and how you can learn to get passive income the right way. They are podcasts (go figure, I love podcasts!).

Action Steps:

  1. Show up everyday (or as much as possible) to spend time and effort in your business.
  2. Create consistent content for your readers and get them on your email list.
  3. Don’t expect money to start rolling in overnight after minimal effort.

I don’t say these things to discourage you from blogging. I love blogging. It is a creative outlet for me and I love helping people. Blogging can be a great way to earn money from home and grow as a person.

But it is not passive (especially at first) and it is not a get rich quick scheme. You need to show up everyday and give it your best effort.

So keep showing up. Keep paying your dues and getting better. Keep blogging until you get where you want to go.

This all depends on what you mean by passive.

Of course you’re going to have to promote your products and services.

However, when you have a massive output of material, it can and does happen. A perfect example of this is copywriter Bob Bly. Bob has published 96 books mostly on the subject of writing.

He has also written and co-written hundreds of eBooks and has a load of information courses he’s created. Many of those courses were made years ago, and you can purchase them at any time from him.

Those 96 Books and courses continue to sell years after they’ve been written too.

He’s sold these courses passively over time and has affiliates that promote his products. Not only that, he has websites that use him to endorse their services like the American Writers and Artists Inc. (AWAI). He makes money from people that sign up to take the AWAI course and it’s all passive.

But, I will say that Bob’s a worker. He is always writing the next great resource book on a particular subject. But, Bob’s got a ton of clout and he’s a millionaire in this industry.

So, yes and no. You can make passive income but there’s work involved in it at some place and time.

    God Bless!

Thank you for your comment. Yes you can earn money passively at some point. But there are many gurus out there that try to tell people you can make money quickly without effort. I just want people to know it takes time and effort to produce content and gain an audience before you can make a living doing this. Thanks for stopping by!

Great post! Completely agree. Looking back, I wish I kept the blogs I started and had a following. I was very young when I began blogging and didn’t know or understand how it would change over the years. Starting anew is hard, but we are determined and work at it constantly. Again, great post!

I absolutely love this post! Thank you for sharing! Ever since I started blogging I’ve heard this “passive income” and how I can make $$$$ While sleep. I knew it was too good to be true. That’s why my business is for my product and speaking, not ads I have to work hard to sell! No! Not me! Thanks for sharing! 😊

I’m not saying it will never happen. But it doesn’t happen overnight and not without a lot of hard work. Thanks for stopping by!
