I love photography. I have made it a big part of my life for the past 15 years.

True confession: sometimes, even the things you love can seem overwhelming or hard.

This is where I have been with my photography for the past few months.

My instagram feed has been sitting with the same pictures on it since the spring.

Look at that! I am writing this in July and I see St. Patricks Day buttons on my Instagram feed, on the first row!

So what happened?

I am in a photography slump, or rut, or funk. Whatever you want to call it, I’ve been stuck.

First of all, I have been super busy with both blogs. Writing blog posts and creating a product for my homesteading blog has taken up most of my time.

I have been using mostly my old photos or stock photos for blog posts just to save time.

Second of all, I just haven’t been feeling creative with my photography lately. I got tired of the old props and backgrounds.

Lastly, my home life with teenagers has been crazy and frustrating. While I still take snapshots of my family doing their everyday things, I haven’t taken intentional photographs with my DSLR in months.

So today, I want to talk about what to do if you are burned out with photography and how to get out of it.

This is just as much for me as it is you, and I hope by the time this post publishes, I will have some fresh content on my Instagram feed!

5 Steps to Bounce Back From Photography Burn Out

1. Take a step back

Sometimes you just need to take a break for a little while. Whether it is photography, blogging, or whatever you may be struggling with, give your self some space to breathe. As you can see, I took several months off of taking new photos (intentionally) and now I am ready to get back in the game.

2. Look for inspiration

When I am stuck and lacking creativity, I like to look around for inspiration. Pinterest, Instagram, magazines, websites and even nature can all give you the inspiration you need to move forward. That doesn’t mean copy what you see. It means take what you love about other peoples work or your surroundings and use it to make new, beautiful photos that have your special touch. Inspiration is everywhere, if you just know where to look!

3. Start a personal project

I have done many personal projects in the past and they always peak my excitement for photography. Whether it is a 365 photo project, taking photos of certain places (cityscape, national parks, landmarks in your small town, etc), or seeing your kids in a new light (faceless photos, black and white, etc), a personal project can help you see your world differently.

4. Take a class

Learning something new about photography will help you get out and shoot again. You can find great tutorials and classes at Clickin Moms, CreativeLive, and KelbyOne that will get you shooting and learning again. You could also find a local, in person photography class to help you be around people that are learning just like you.

5. Print your photos

In this digital age, often we take photos and they stay digital. Whether that is your phone, your camera or your computer, digital photos aren’t meant to stay digital forever. Print out some of your favorite photos and put them up on your wall or on your desk where you can see them each day. This brings them to life and helps you share them with others. This will encourage you to keep shooting so you can add to your collection.

Don’t stay stumped or burned out forever. You got into photography to take and share pictures with friends, family and even strangers. Don’t forget why you started in the first place.

Action Steps:

  1. If you are burned out, try to identify why it happened in the first place.
  2. Seek for inspiration from sources around you to get your creative juices flowing again.
  3. Try a new skill or personal project to move your photography journey forward again.

Hopefully, one of these tips will help you get your mojo back for photography. Photography is a great hobby and a great way to increase the value of your blog posts.

So whether you are a blogger, a mom, a photographer, or all three, don’t give up hope. You’ll be back behind the camera in no time (that goes for me too!)
